Identity. The world can easily try to sell us a new identity and at what cost? The cost of our old, true, and unwavering identity. We like to believe, or rather, try to convince ourselves that we can be both a child of God and have an identity associated with the world. This is a false idea. We either are part of the world or part of the Kingdom of Heaven. We cannot find our identity in both, because they contradict each other. A worldly identity focuses on us. A Kingdom of Heaven identity focuses on God and keeps Him at the center. Everyday we are faced with the battle of what we are going to place our identity and worth in. Will it be our grades, job, bank account, spouse, married, single, a failure, and on and on I could go... or will we choose to allow our identity to be found in the One True God? The Bible is FILLED with characteristics we can strive to achieve and what we should be. Seek the truth where truth is found, His Word. Who is God? Who is Jesus, how does He act? How does He react? How does He live? What characteristics does the Bible share that a follower of Christ should imitate?
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Gal 5:22-23
1 Corinthians talks about love. The Bible is filled with encouragement to love.
The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. Ps. 116:5
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Matt. 5:14
These are just a few examples. And if we are told to be imitators of God, then we should imitate His actions and characteristics. When you place your identity in something, you become that thing, and it becomes your title, it becomes who you are. Let God identify you. Let Him be your identity. Not that you would be God, but that you would be a child of Him, a follower of Him, a citizen of Heaven. That your identity wouldn't be placed in the things of this world. What are you using to identify yourself? How has this negatively effected you (if you haven't been finding your identity in God and His Word)? Identify yourself in God and everything else will fall under Him.
